The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office announced on Apr. 28 the assignment of Deputy Kelly Searle as the first full-time School Resource Officer (SRO) for Bennett School District 29J.
Deputy Searle, who has served with the Sheriff’s Office for eight years, will be based at Bennett High School and will also support Bennett Middle School, Intermediate School, and Elementary School. The new assignment is part of the office’s ongoing efforts to enhance public safety in the Town of Bennett and nearby areas.
Bureau Chief Ken McKlem said, “SROs provide a level of safety and security that is unmatched in the event of a violent incident at a school by serving as the first line of defense to save lives. In addition to that critical role, they mentor students, teach classes, respond to Safe2Tell tips, and help connect young people with resources when they are in crisis.”
Robin Purdy, Superintendent of Bennett School District, said, “We’re excited to have a new full-time SRO on campus to provide that extra layer of safety. In addition to that role, they will also serve as a point of contact for students and staff and help build positive relationships within the school community.”
This appointment restores a dedicated SRO presence after an earlier part-time position ended in April 2024 due to changes in law enforcement services. As of May 1, 2024, under an intergovernmental agreement, Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office became the primary law enforcement agency for Bennett.
Purdy said further: “We appreciate the opportunity to re-establish this role and look forward to working collaboratively in support of our students and staff.”
The Sheriff’s Office has operated its School Resource Officer program since 1992 across several districts including Cherry Creek, Littleton, Byers, and Deer Trail. The program follows National Association of School Resource Officers best practices; deputies are selected and trained specifically for work within schools where they act as educators, counselors, mentors—and law enforcement officers.
McKlem added: “We are working in full cooperation with school officials to ensure this program best serves the Bennett school community including students, staff and families. We look forward to expanding our service and strengthening relationships in the growing communities east of the metro area.”
Deputy Searle’s new assignment highlights what officials describe as a proactive approach toward student safety while aiming at stronger connections between youth and law enforcement.
