The Denver Broncos are preparing for a high-stakes regular-season finale against the Los Angeles Chargers this Sunday. With a 13-3 record, the Broncos can secure the top seed in the AFC and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs if they win.

“Our focus is, this is a playoff game,” said Head Coach Sean Payton on Wednesday.

A victory would allow Denver to match its highest win total in franchise history and earn a first-round bye in the postseason. Cornerback Pat Surtain II commented on the team’s mindset: “We didn’t come this far just to come this far.”

The Chargers will be without starting quarterback Justin Herbert and possibly other key players. Despite this, Payton emphasized that his team remains focused. “I think these guys are smart enough to understand the importance of the game,” he said Friday.

One area of concern for Denver has been turnovers. The Broncos currently rank near the bottom of the league in turnover margin after losing that battle in their last two games, ending a positive streak from Weeks 11-15. Payton noted Monday, “The one area that has to improve is the turnover margin, and that can happen.” He referenced data showing most Super Bowl winners have strong turnover differentials during their playoff runs.

Defensive Coordinator Vance Joseph addressed how critical it will be for his defense to generate takeaways while maintaining disciplined play: “I want more, we need more turnovers, but we have to focus on playing the right way. That’s the first way.”

With Herbert sidelined, Trey Lance will start at quarterback for Los Angeles. Lance has played sparingly this season but was drafted third overall in 2021 due to his athletic ability and arm strength. Joseph said of Lance: “He’s athletic, he can run… He can make every throw on the field.” Surtain added: “Obviously, Herbert is a great player, but we are preparing the same as if he were out there… We’re definitely not taking this game lightly.”

Another factor could be Denver’s home crowd at Empower Field at Mile High. The Broncos have won 13 of their last 15 home games and believe fan support could disrupt Los Angeles’ offense.

“Let’s get this [stadium], when they’re getting in the huddle, deafening,” Payton urged fans Wednesday.

Tackle Mike McGlinchey praised local supporters: “Our crowd has been one of the best in the world right now.” Payton echoed those sentiments Friday: “Listen, the atmosphere will be fantastic… and it matters.”

Denver hopes that both strong play on defense and vocal fan support will help them clinch a crucial win as they aim for postseason success.
