The Denver Broncos have secured the No. 1 seed in the AFC after defeating the Los Angeles Chargers 19-3 on Sunday, putting them in a strong position for the playoffs. With this achievement, the team needs two home victories to advance to Super Bowl LX in Santa Clara.

Head Coach Sean Payton described earning the top seed as an important milestone. “It’s significant,” Payton said. “And the reason is, you can see the light. Two home wins — and that’s exciting. It’s why you do all of it. It’s why you work late hours. It’s why the players train and lift. It’s a big deal.”

Following last season’s playoff loss to Buffalo, Denver set its sights on winning the AFC West and has now captured its first division title in ten years, ensuring at least one home playoff game. The win over Los Angeles guarantees that if Denver continues to succeed, they will play at home throughout their postseason run.

Outside linebacker Nik Bonitto commented on the team’s progress: “It just shows the toughness and just the will and the ability to keep being able to grow,” he said. “I feel like it’s been pretty special being a part of that.”

The Broncos will learn their divisional round opponent next week but are certain that any path to Super Bowl LX will require teams to come through Denver.

Cornerback Pat Surtain II highlighted both optimism and caution: “We feel like, as a team, we have a lot to correct and a lot to adjust, but at the end of the day, we are glad we have home-field advantage,” Surtain said. “You need as much of an advantage going into the playoffs [as possible]. That’s a huge part of it, securing the No. 1 seed and getting home-field advantage. That’s big time for us. I feel like we aren’t a finished product. We aren’t where we want to be yet.”

Tight end Evan Engram echoed those sentiments about maintaining focus: “You still have to take it one step at a time,” Engram said. “We still have to stay present where our feet are and prepare for the moment. That moment will come if we handle this moment correctly.”

Payton also noted his own accomplishment as only the fifth coach in NFL history to guide two different organizations to a No. 1 seed during his career but stressed continued improvement is needed: “To be able to host the Divisional Round is significant,” he said. “Yes, we have to clean some things up, and we will. We’ll be ready.”

Inside linebacker Alex Singleton summed up what reaching this stage means for Denver: “It’s special,” Singleton said. “That’s the goal. You want to be the [No.] 1 seed. We are the [No. 1] seed.… You can see the light.

“Let’s go get the job done, win three and get to raise the Lombardi.”
