In a closely contested AFC West game, the Denver Broncos defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 22-19 on Sunday in Denver. The win strengthens the Broncos’ position at the top of their division as they head into their bye week.

The Broncos’ defense limited Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, while rookie quarterback Bo Nix led two key fourth-quarter drives that resulted in field goals. The victory marks Denver’s seventh win in nine one-score games this season. Neither team led by more than seven points during the matchup.

Following this result, Denver (9-2) holds a two-game lead over the Los Angeles Chargers and a 3.5-game lead over Kansas City in the AFC West. According to The Athletic, Denver now has a 75 percent chance of winning its division after Sunday’s games.

“Look, I’d be lying right to everyone if I didn’t say it was a big win,” said Head Coach Sean Payton.

Several plays contributed to Denver’s victory. One significant moment came when offensive tackle Frank Crum blocked an extra point after a Travis Kelce touchdown for Kansas City. This play kept the Chiefs’ lead at three points instead of four, allowing Denver to tie the game with a field goal rather than needing a touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

Defensively, Denver excelled in red-zone situations. The Broncos allowed only one touchdown on four Kansas City trips inside the red zone and forced an interception from Mahomes on another attempt. Over their last four games against Mahomes, Denver has given up just two touchdowns on 13 red-zone possessions.

Ja’Quan McMillian made notable contributions with two sacks and an interception, becoming the first cornerback in franchise history to achieve those stats in a single game. He also delivered a crucial fourth-quarter sack that helped force consecutive three-and-outs for Kansas City.

Special teams played an important role as well; Marvin Mims Jr. returned punts for 70 and 24 yards, both leading to scoring drives for Denver.

On offense, kicker Wil Lutz converted all five field-goal attempts, including a 54-yarder that tied the score late in the game. Bo Nix completed his fifth game-winning drive of the season—tying him for most such drives league-wide—and Pat Bryant set a career high with 82 receiving yards, highlighted by a 48-yard catch. Troy Franklin led all Broncos receivers with 84 yards and caught a key pass that set up Lutz’s decisive field goal.
