The Denver Broncos extended their winning streak to 11 games with a comeback victory over the Green Bay Packers, clinching a playoff spot and maintaining their lead in the AFC race. The game, played on an unusually warm December afternoon in Denver, saw the Broncos face a nine-point deficit midway through the third quarter after a 40-yard touchdown run by Packers running back Josh Jacobs.

Despite trailing 23-14 and being outplayed for much of the first half, Denver’s fortunes shifted following a key play by cornerback Pat Surtain II. On Green Bay’s next possession, quarterback Jordan Love targeted wide receiver Christian Watson deep downfield. Surtain intercepted the pass—his first of the season—helping spark a 20-3 run that led to a 34-28 win for Denver.

Quarterback Bo Nix highlighted the importance of Surtain’s interception: “It was huge,” Nix said. “Any sudden turnover just gets some adrenaline, gets some energy back in the game. … Man, he went after that football, got it, and that’s when I felt like [momentum] started falling back on our side.”

Surtain returned to form after missing three games due to a pectoral injury earlier in the season. Teammates noted his dedication during rehab and his impact since returning. Defensive tackle Malcolm Roach commented: “He’s one of the greatest for a reason,” Roach said. “But it’s not [only] a Sunday thing. We see him train. We saw his rehab, every day he was coming back from the pec. It was killing him [that] he couldn’t play. He [doesn’t] really talk that much, but you could see it from him. … He felt that he wasn’t playing up to his standard when he came back. We knew it was coming though, and we know he always rises up in the big games, and that’s what he did today.”

Nix added: “We may have to use him on offense,” Nix joked. “… I think he’s one of the best players in the league for a reason, and he showed it on that play. He’s had some ups and downs this season, he’s battled through it, and that was a Pat Surtain play right there. Not many can make it, and he’s one of the ones that do.”

Reflecting on his performance, Surtain explained how preparation played into his interception: “Obviously, it was a pivotal situation — we needed to make a play,” Surtain said. “They [were] up two possessions, so I was like ‘We’ve got to find a way.’ I [saw] the ball in the air and I had to make a play… Just from recognition… they were trying to attack deep… I kept my leverage, played high and made a play on the ball.”

Following Surtain’s takeaway, Denver’s defense limited Love’s effectiveness—allowing only 55 passing yards over nearly two quarters—and recorded another interception along with three sacks.

The Broncos’ offense capitalized as well; Nix directed three straight touchdown drives as Denver scored 20 of the final 23 points.

“We always pride ourselves on finishing games especially important games like this,” Surtain said after holding Green Bay scoreless during critical moments late in regulation.

With their postseason berth secured ahead of schedule and home-field advantage still at stake for upcoming weeks’ matchups—including possible top seed positioning—the Broncos are focused on maintaining momentum into January football.

“We just kept talking about it all week how big of a game this was,” Surtain said regarding their mindset moving forward toward bigger playoff contests ahead.
