CHERRY CREEK SCHOOLS: The week that was: A weekly wrap-up of CCSD athletics

Football

Cherry Creek Schools issued the following announcement on Nov. 23.

The No. 1 Cherry Creek Bruins football team advanced to the 5A State Football semifinals on Friday afternoon, with a 29-6 victory over a tough Regis Jesuit squad. The Bruins were led by senior running back James Walker, II, who had three touchdowns in the contest, including a 96-yard TD run in the 2nd quarter. The Creek defense held the No. 8 Raiders to just two field goals on the afternoon. With the victory, the 7-0 Bruins move on to host No. 4 Pomona (who defeated Eaglecrest in the first round) at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 28 at the Stutler Bowl.

Also on Friday, No. 5 Eaglecrest had their season come to a close, falling to No. 4 Pomona 49-14 in a first-round playoff at Valor Stadium. Coach Shawn Marsh’s Raptors trailed 14-13 into the second quarter, but couldn’t stop a potent ground game from the Panthers, who outscored Eaglecrest 35-6 the rest of the way in the victory. The Raptors finish the 2020 campaign at 4-2.

On Thursday, No. 7 Cherokee Trail travelled to Valor Christian to take on the No. 2 Eagles in first- round action. A potent Valor running attack overwhelmed the Cougars, amassing more than 400 yards of total offense in a 49-14 victory. Coach Joe Johnson’s Cougars end the season at 4-3 overall.

Another big story for CCSD teams also took place on Thursday, as Smoky Hill finished their season with an impressive 52-26 win over northern visitor Fossil Ridge at the Stutler Bowl. Smoky Hill senior quarterback Leslie Richardson, III threw eight touchdown passes on the night, breaking the school record of seven set back in 2007. Junior Anthony Harris, Jr. caught four of the TD passes and seniors Alec Pinkowski and Davien Norman caught two apiece. Richardson’s 634 passing yards also broke the school record, and now stands as fourth all-time according to CHSAA records. CHSAA archives also show that only two quarterbacks have thrown more touchdowns (nine and ten) in a single game in state history. Five others have thrown eight. Coach Tom Thenell’s Buffaloes finish the season at 3-4.
