The Regis University men's basketball program is excited to announce the additions of eight signees to the 2022 Recruiting Class, revamping a Rangers' roster fresh off a postseason run to the RMAC Tournament title game last season.
Regis underwent major roster changes during the offseason with the graduation of starters Brian Dawson and Troy Brady, as well as the departure of starting guard Will Cranston-Lown as he pursues a professional career overseas.
But with a lot of major pieces back in the fold, head coach Brady Bergeson said the Rangers coaching staff was aggressive in finding immediate impact pieces and young talent to retool the roster for the 2022-23 campaign.
"Our goals for the class this year were to make sure we had a blend of immediate impact guys along with a strong core that we can help develop for the future. I think we achieved that," Bergeson said. "Something else we really targeted was being more balanced one through five, where we feel like we have scoring and play-making at every position and depth at every spot. We feel we achieved that goal, as well. We are always recruiting versatility and I think we have a pretty versatile team."
The Rangers' eight signees include:
David Simental | Graduate Student | Guard | 6'2 | 185 | Pueblo West, Colo.
Simental will be a familiar name to RMAC basketball fans as Simental was a two-year star at Colorado State University Pueblo from 2019-2021, highlighted by a 2020-21 season where he averaged 18.9 points while shooting 56% from the field, 44% from 3-point range and 94% at the free-throw line.
The Second Team All-RMAC selection then transferred to the University of Nebraska-Kearney for the 2021-22 season, where Simental averaged 18.8 points on 45% shooting and a 41% clip from 3-point range en route to being named Third Team All-MIAA.
Bergeson on Simental: "It's not often you have the opportunity to sign a proven all-conference level player. David has a unique combination of skill and IQ that makes him an elite player at our level. Our goal is to incorporate what he already does well into our system and help develop some of the other parts of his game."
Jasdeep Singh | Senior | Forward | 6'8 | 215 | Delta, British Columbia
Singh bolsters the Regis front court with a proven, efficient scorer and rebounder after two strong seasons with Simon Fraser University. The 6'8 forward averaged 16.1 points, 2.4 assists and 6.0 rebounds as a junior while shooting 47% from the floor and 37% from 3-point range.
His versatility on offense is matched by Singh's ability to guard multiple positions, on the perimeter and in the paint, with his size and athleticism.
Bergeson on Singh: "Jas is another proven player at our level. He is a versatile threat who is hard to guard at 3 levels, and most impressively, he is very hungry to learn."
CJ Reed | Sophomore | Guard | 6'0 | 160 | Newark, California
Reed is a dynamic playmaker that comes to Regis after one season with Citrus College, where he averaged 12 points and 1.9 assists per game while starting 29 games for an Owls team that finished 23-7 overall en route to the CCCAA State Championship quarterfinal.
Reed shot 41% percent from the floor and added 2.8 rebounds per game from the guard position in 20.6 minutes per game.
Bergeson on Reed: CJ played in one of the best JC programs in California. He comes from winning and carries a winning competitive drive with him. His ability to play on and off ball as well as score and create for others should get him opportunity to help us right away.
Josh Pearre | Freshman | Guard | 6'3 | 195 | McKinney, Texas
Standing with a 6'3 and 195-pound frame, Pearre is a true freshman the Rangers have high hopes for following a prep career that saw the Texas native succeed on and off the court.
Starring for McKinney North, Pearre was named First Team All-District 10-5A after averaging 14 points, five rebounds and five assists per game. A member of the National Honor Society, he'd also go on to earn Academic All-State honors and graduated in the top-10 percent of his class.
Bergeson on Pearre: "Josh is an athletic guard with a big upside. He can drive, shoot, and defend. And we love that he is a team guy first."
Chase Mayo Harmon | Freshman | Guard | 6'4 | 175 | Peoria, Arizona
Mayo Harmon proved to be an elite talent on the Arizona prep scene, averaging 24 points on 41% shooting, nine rebounds and six assists his senior season with PHH Prep.
His scoring prowess was highlighted by a 42-point performance in which he set the school record for points in a game and the single-game free throw record with a spotless 24-for-24 mark.
Bergeson on Mayo Harmon: "Chase is a basketball junky with a big drive to improve. His length and scoring ability combined with a fierce determination will make him a problem for opponents."
Vojin Mastilovic | Freshman | Forward | 6'8 | 200 | Belgrade, Serbia
A fan of the NBA two-time MVP and his countryman Nikola Jokic, Mastilovic is hoping to make his own mark as the newest Serbian basketball player to head to Denver.
Born in Las Vegas and raised in Belgrade, Mastilovic moved back to the states to play high school basketball at Spring Creek Academy in Plano, Texas. His unlimited shooting range made him an impact player on a team that finished 24-11 during the 2021-22 season and won the Southwest Athletic Interscholastic Conference Championship.
Bergeson on Mastilovic: "Vojin is a long athletic forward with a great skill set. The first thing you notice about him is his beautiful shot, but he can also pass, post, drive, and defend. He has been well coached and is driven to improve and compete for time."
Aaron Ofstun | Freshman | Forward | 6'8 | 205 | Longview, Washington
A three-sport athlete in high school, Ofstun earned All-State honors for his work on the basketball court at R.A. Long High School, guiding his team to a fifth-place finish in the Class 2A State Championships.
Ofstun, a member of the National Honor Society, was ranked as the 42nd best senior player in Washington state by Brooks Scouting Report.
Bergeson on Ofstun: "Aaron is a big man with big upside. He has good size, mobility, and footwork. Once he adapts to this level of play, he will be a versatile match up problem."
Dylan Forbord | Freshman | Guard | 6'5 | 180 | Parker, Colorado
A local product from nearby Parker, Forbord starred for Legend High School where he averaged 16 points, six rebounds and four steals his senior season. His played earned him Second Team All-Continental League.
Bergeson on Forbord: Dylan is a long wing with good athleticism. He has the ability to shoot the three and uses his length to drive and finish. He has the frame and mobility to develop into a bigger athletic perimeter threat.
