Utah State junior Josh Pehrson has been named the MW Men’s Golfer of the Week. There was no selection for MW Men’s Golf Freshman of the Week. On the women’s side, San José State sophomore Lucia Lopez Ortega is the MW Women’s Golfer of the Week, while Nevada’s Gabby Kano earned MW Women’s Golf Freshman of the Week.
This is the fifth weekly/monthly Conference honor for Lopez Ortega and first for Pehrson and Kano.
MEN’S GOLFER OF THE WEEK
JOSH PEHRSON, UTAH STATE
Junior, Kaysville, Utah / Davis HS
- Finished tied for fourth after shooting a career-tying 54-hole score of 6-under 210 at the Pizza Hut/Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational, on the Par-72 Sunbrook Golf Course in St. George, Utah.
- The fourth-place finish is a career-low.
- Carded a career-low-tying 6-under 66 in the first round of the event.
- Finished the tournament with nine birdies and an eagle.
LUCIA LOPEZ ORTEGA, SAN JOSé STATE
Sophomore, Sa Coma, Mallorca, Spain / Les Ortega Y Gasset
- At the Therese Hession Regional Challenge, played on the Par-71 Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes, California, tied for fifth place, shooting an even-par 213.
- Finished ahead of six golfers ranked in Golfstat’s top-25 nationally.
- Carded two-under par 69s in the first two rounds of the event.
- Led the Spartans to a fifth-place team finish in a field that featured 13 teams ranked 37th or better on Golfstat.
Gabby Kano, NEVADA
Fullerton, California / Troy HS
- Competing in the Mountain Classic Match Play, compiled a 2-1 record, earning victories in the semifinal and championship rounds to help Nevada earn the team title.
- In the semifinal round against Montana State, needed just 15 holes to defeat her opponent, and followed that up with another 15-hole victory in the championship match against Northern Arizona.
